What is the history of the Bridal Shower?Legend tell us that the tradition of the bridal shower gift originated in Holland. A young Dutch girl fell in love with a poor miller, who had spent his life helping those needier than himself. As a result of his unselfishness he had little to offer his bride when they were ready to be married. Soon after, the young woman told her father that she intended to marry the miller. He was very angry and forbade the marriage. In an effort to dissuade her, the woman's father refused to give her the customary bridal "dowry". He had hoped this would help her change her mind and wait for a man with more money and higher status. Despite her father's refusal to accept her pending marriage the young woman decided to go ahead and marry her true love. Without a dowry, the couple had very little to their names and were very poor. When the young couple's friends and neighbors heard about their situation they decided in an effort to thank the miller for all the kindness that he had shown them, they "showered" the bride with gifts and necessities for the couple's home. Thanks to their kindness the bride acquired what her father had denied her and she had everything she needed to set up a new home. What's new for Bridal Shower Gifts?Traditionally the hostess of most Bridal Showers is the maid or matron of honor. Or the Bridal Shower can be hosted by a close friend, co-worker or family member. This is a wonderful and joyous time for family and friends of the bride to get together. Share a meal and swap fun stories and play a few games if you like! The reason for a Bridal Shower is to "shower" the bride with gifts that will help to assist the couple in equipping their new home together. However as of late focus has shifted to theme parties like lingerie, kitchen, linen or any other number of themes that would suit the Bride/Groom. Consider doing the "in" thing which is a day at the spa! Or switch gears and do a "traditional thing" and have tea and finger sandwiches. Whatever you decide you can really have some fun and use your imagination. |
